Well, buy a new exhaust gasket, then go to mazdatrix and buy a new shifter boot it is rather expensive, and you will never smell it again. Well at least not until you open your door.

Could be fumes entering the passenger compartment through there. Take off the ****, and shifter panel to see if all the rubber shift boots are still intact. These act both to keep noise down and in some cases, fumes out.
If the boots are gone, torn to shreds, etc, get them replaced. Cost is about $50 from the dealer. There's a "middle" set which includes the one that bolts ot the chassis, and two that slide on top of that. The "inner" boot slides over the shift lever and bolts to the shifter housing on the tranny. These are often torn. While you're in there, unbolt the inner boot and verify that the two shifter bushings are still there. If not, go buy those too. If replacing bushings, you will need to replace the inner boot, because it is often torn while trying to take it off the shift lever.
But if fumes are getting in there, you may have an exhaust leak at the gasket you mentioned.
