Custom exhuast

Wouldnt it be better to have a exhuast shop do custom exhuast for you than buy one already made?

I know this is better for proteges and 323s, but not sure about the rx7.

It depends on what you want. You need to decide on what diameter and length you want, material, style (single/dual, Y, long or short primary, etc.), sound, torque vs. hp, etc., and then shop around.

I put a really nice $2,600 custom exhaust on my 20B, I bought my TII with a cheap but functional $200 catback exhaust, and I bought an $800 Racing Beat bolt-on exhaust for my 1Gen. I think that covers most of the options, and I was quite happy with all of them.

theres two kinds of medals...the medal that the shops uses is a medal that when they bend it, it isent the same size as what u wanted on the bends its smaller...the name brands use a medal that will stay the same size thu the whole bend...so does that help u under stand more to spend a lil more on the name brand

Net Seven - I'm having my custom exhuast made with Stainless Steel. I want to make it once and forget about it. It will cost more initially but will last much longer. Finding someone who can bend the tubing good is a hard thing to do. Mandrel bent is ideal but expensive. A well done crush bent system is still better than the factory stuff.

nitro - Dude, you are so misinformed and buy a Webster's Dictionary.

I think it's amazing so many people mention it's hard to find anyone that can do mandrel bending. I went into a shop one day while getting a piece of SS shaped for an intake. I asked about a cat back for my FC, drew a diagram of how i'd want it. Provided I bring them 2 mufflers, they'd bend, weld, and install for around $150. When I get a DP/HF cat, i'm gonna goto the same shop and have them cut me a MP and weld em to flanges that match up. So I should spend a whopping 30-40 bucks for a mid pipe.

No one around Abilene does Mandrel bending, so you have to buy the pieces of tubing pre bent and then weld them on. Not too expensive and for the dollar it's a worthwhile effort. In the long run i think that it's cheaper to go with your own design rather than purchase one. Just don't use glass material and you should have a long lasting system. good luck.

Im buying straight pipe and U-bends from Summit and welding my own exhaust. My dad has an acetylene torch and a hacksaw. With some careful planning I can do a neat, clean exhaust. Im not saying this will be easy, but heres the deal...

Straight pipe-- 3", 4 ft. sections -- $13.39 each

U-bends-- 3" tube, 6" radius, 4" legs -- $21.95 each

Some badass 3" straight through SS muffler- $80-150 from NOPI, havent picked one out yet.

Turbo flange from Mazdatrix -- cant remember the price, lets say $20

So there it is, a complete exhaust for <$275. Im all about my own custom ****

Exhaust is not expensive, Flashy exhaust SYSTEMS are expensive. Do not be led on by a brand name!!!

This is true, but it is also true that quality exhaust systems are expensive. Mandrel bends, 321 stainless steel, wastegate bellows, slip joints, quick-change v-bands, and someone who knows how to design it and put it all together properly is going to cost you big bucks. Now, whether or not you feel that you need these things is another story.
