Exhaust Question

First off I searched. I have a small question about my exhaust. It has no cats just a straight pipe to some universal fart can. When I let off the gas it sputters. (I'm not really sure how to describe it.) I'm not sure if this is normal because of back pressure or what. I'm still learning about rotary and cars in general. I don't think its normal. Is it because of no cats. Thanks in advance.

hhhmmmm... when mine was a NA, i had a header to 3" single exhaust to a 4" muffler...... and no sputter.... so, its not because of your exhaust........ some further info might help..... @ what rpm does it sputter?? does it sputter while driving ever??? describe the "sputter"...

Well I'm not sure if sputter best describes it. If I rev it up past 3k then let off the gas (driving or in neutral) it putts. I guess I really can't describe it very well. When ideling it occasionally pops also. I don't know if that helps at all either.

I have a 2.5" straight pipe with a fart can and it sputters too. Does it explode out the back when you let off pass 7k?

Yes it does, even on the highway if I take my foot of the gas to slow down it pops and occasionally backfires depending on rpm.

ok,......so you hear a "putt" putt" sound out of the exhaust....... if that is the case, then yes, its common...... mine did that!! sputtering is a problem, but not "putting"...lol

an occasional backfire is common also..... actually if your the person behind a 7 while it back fires, it shoots a flame out of the exhaust! but its common

The straight pipe allows that to happen.

yeah, multitudes of strange noises are common on a straight NA exhaust...you may be able to reduce the frequency by getting everything tuned up and adjusted properly (i.e. TPS)...

also, if you just want i quiten it down and save some money, put the stock exhaust manifold back on...

Well I just bought the RB cat back exhaust along with the downpipe and presilencer. Hopefully it will quiet it down some. I really like the way the duals look as opposed to my single set up.
