exhaust dilemia!!!
exhaust dilemia!!!
so i straight piped my car with the true duals.. and its way to dam loud. anyone have any ideas or something i can do to quiet it way down. something that can just be put in the exhaust itself instead of paying for someone to weld it again
a good quality pre-silencer
just like scathcart said, in the middle of the exhaust system. i have one on my TII and she is very quite. its a rb one. i know the turbo also quites the system down but it should help you aswell.

You mean you just jammed some wool in the pipe? Not a good idea. It'll flow terrible.
All a presilencer is, is a chamber with a perforated tube the same diameter as the exhaust piping. The stainless wool is on the OUTSIDE of the perforated pipe in the chamber. This doesn't really disturb the flow characteristcs that much and quiets down the exhaust considerably.
When you fabed the true dual, did you use thick walled tubing? This makes a VERY big difference in the sound-levels inside the car. The thin walls of the tubing transmit the sound into the engine cabin.
With thick-walled exhaust tubing, it'll still make your ears bleed outside the car, but I have no trouble driving 10-12 hours with my dual set-up.
If the tubing is thin walled (What most muffler shops use), its going to be more difficult to quiet it down. Not impossible, but much harder.
I don't know of any way to do it without welding in additional pieces, so get cutting.

First off, do you have mufflers at all? Second if you do, get some presilencers and just have some flanges welded on by an exhaust shop. Then you can cut the same size piping out as the presilencer yourself and bolt it in. Third option-buy an econo car

well, just to jam in something, try a header insert pipe. They flow like a beauty, and are used in V-8 race cars so that they can meet NHRA race sound specs and yet run open headers.
Summit sells them, part number: CCI-3DI02R
page 190 on the new catalog.
this requires you to have 2" exhaust pipe on both pipes, at the minimum.
I dunno about steel wool. That's more of a temporary thing.
I do think your methods seem pretty slack.. for performance exhaust, you just wanna jam something in there? Weld in some XR1's and do it right.

Just install a turbo! The compressor wheel will silence the exhaust some and you will also love the power gains.
OK, ok. I was just kidding. (it is a good idea, though)
there is nothing you will be able to do without more welding, as everything must be placed in the exhaust gas stream, which means cutting and welding.
