exahust tone change leads to stalling!

Well I am new to the forum and I have been reading and learning as fast as a I can. I just recently bought an 87 GXL N/A. Well after taking it for the normal jog threw the farm lands nothing out of the normal just like any nights when I stop at a stop sign and I heard kind of like a clinking thud type noise. Like a metal pipe hitting a mat. Well like I said I am new to the rx7 community so I don’t know normal sounds for the car. Well the exhaust tone changed at the stop sign it got a bit more bass to it. So I pulled it over into the shoulder and had my friend who was following me in his car, well trying to “hehe” had him tap the gas and the tone was different then normal and it sounded like it was sucking air back into the exhaust pipes. It never did this before so I was worried I had him tap it a few more times and same thing well I turned it off and gave it 30 min to just cool of I thought maybe something over heated and was causing it not to run right, so not wanting to risk hurting it any I got my dad t come pick it up and we loaded it onto the trailer and took it home. Some of u are probably laughing right now but it my only mode of transportation and 1,300.00 is not in my budget for a new motor. Well we unloaded it and started it up and it still sounded like it did and after u rev it one time it would hang just a little above 1thousand rpm for just a second then would almost stall out and then be fine. So we took it for a drive and it feels the same just with a lower tone. Got it home and let it sit and reved it one time and it stalled. The car is about to hit 58thousand miles original engine the exhaust looks like a blind dumb-*** put it on one pipe is sitting higher and the other one is sticking out farther. The exhaust used to come out smooth like one constant blast of air and now its kind of spluttery. Any ideas on what might have broken.

I will be checking the pipe in the morning to see if it has cracked or anything.

Thanks for any help
Pete.
I have only seen 3 rx7s in my area and only one of them is owned by a kid and the dealership doesn’t know anything about rotary so my sources for info are limited.: confused:

my T2 did something similar a while back. the exhaust tone would get a lot deeper whenever my intake came loose from the turbo. i dunno if it could cause the same thing on an N/A but check to see if your intake is connected at all places. if it comes off anywhere behind the AFM it is a big vac leak. that may be your problem, least it was on mine.

Well I got a chance to get under my car. I checked, poked, and pulled on everything on the exhaust everything is fine with it just some rust on the heat shields. Well after I got it off the stands I popped the hood and gave everything a once over vac lines seem okay. Idle sound is okay now to but it still has that air sucking back in noise. And the engine is shaking a good bit when I let the car come down below 15hundread rpms “no foot on the gas or anything just reving it and letting it come down”. Could my spark plugs be fouled up. And causing it to do that.
Any one that lives in the MD/DC area know of a good mechanic for rx7's thanks for any input u can give me.

Pete
