Ever used Flowmaster mufflers?

I was wondering if anyone has ever used a flowmaster muffler on their rx-7. I think it would sound pretty mean, they have that really low grumble to them.

Is there a reason why they arent used more often, like for instance the heat factor?

I think mine is probably a flowmaster, might not be though. It sounds alright, but it has distinct hollow metal tinny sound to it (mostly just at idle outside the car), I'm gonna go with Magnaflow for my next exhaust system and see how that works out.

I don't think they can take the heat. Especially if they are the only thing in the system (no cats).

They can't take the heat from what I've heard. I have Magnaflows...the universal series with polished stainless bodies and stainless packing. Those hold up quite well and sound nice and deep.

Our cars, especially without cats, will eat the fiberglass out of a muffler in a matter of HOURS.

I dont think it is a heat dissipation problem. I think the problem is related to the fact that the flame front has a tendancy to travel out of the combustion chamber into the exhaust

This is in part because of a lack of valves to stop this from happening, and also because it is hard for the engine to burn the fuel/air mixture closest to the apex seals (Thus part of the need for 'trailing' plugs, the long combustion chamber)

This is as I understand it as picked up on the board, I may be totally wrong. :-p

Hey guys. My ghetto exhaust has a downpipe connected DIRECTLY to a 40 series flowmaster. It exits just aft the doors under the car

1) Yes it is loud.
2) It wouldn't be that bad if it went all the way back though
3) Considering the price, they aren't THAT bad. The big issue is that they don't fit well in the stock muffler tunnels.

I've been riding on mine (its only a few feet from the exhaust ports, no cat = hot) with lots of backfires /w bright flames for about 3 months. The thing hasn't blown out or died. It sounds *VERY* throaty, to a point where its almost anoying (would again, be MUCH better if I had two muflers with rear exit).

I don't think they are that bad. I would assume most the people here that say they are pieces of **** have never used them.

As for the glasspacking, I don't think the 40series has the packing anyhow.

i have only a precat, and have 3" piping all the way back to a magnaflow.

Sounds nice and deep, not insanely loud.

I know of some that are on their 4th season in ITS racing. They race all over the southeast and do a few endurance races each year. They have no cats in there system. Just a long primary header collected right before the single muffler. They don't have any problems meeting the sound **** requirments at the tracks.

Its like the racing beat ****'s around here... I'm sure racing beats are compeltely awesome, not everyone can afford them though. As though if its not racing beat, it must be crap and not work on a rotary engine...

Ive seen many threads that say flowmasters suck, but then ive seen people use them and say they're fine. I havent really heard anything bad about magnaflow though, so maybe ill go with that. RB is just too damn expensive

I also want to keep noise levels down to id say medium (?) at most, and with only a 2.5" down pipe and 3" straight pipe (no cats) what muffler would you recommend that wont blow up on me in a few days?

Actually, I think anything thats not a $20 ebay piece of **** should do fairly well if its rear bumper exit. My flowmaster is fine and its only a couple feet from the exhaust ports. I would think that any reputable manf should make muflers decent enough. Just make sure you buy them under warrantee

Magnaflow is great, sounds very nice with cats, or without cats. Its what I have, and I've had it under both applications. I suggest Dual Magnaflows.
