Looks aside - if it isn't made for a rotary, chances are it's a glass-pack unit. If this is the case, it'll melt in short order. You'll be left with an empty unit that'll be loud and sound hollow.

I don't know about that.. glasspacks mounted at the rear of the car don't do so bad.

Glass pack just means the muffler itself is packed with fiberglass, kind of hard to tell. I was given a car that had 3 glasspacks, two on the ends of each muffler before the tips, and one before the Y pipe, and it sounds pretty damn good!

If he thinks the glasspack isn't good for his car, just wait till he gets a flowmaster on it
If he wants a good performing, well built, nice sounding muffler for a cheap price he should look into Magnaflow and Borla.

You want to avoid the "louver core" glasspacks. When you look through the muffler, some are regular tubing with holes in it, and others have "louvers" or little fins sticking up - these are ones to avoid.

Yeah, a 7 with 3 glasspacks. It sounds (or did) damn good, but we stole the engine from it so it purrs no more.

Why do you want to avoid the louvered kind? Is it going to hurt the engine, or is it just that it reduces flow and therefor the potential power? Is this only for glasspacks? ie, are louvered steel-packed muflers alright?

Just because he doesn't know doesn't make him a ricer. And just because it's made my APC doesn't make him a ricer either...

What do you have on their now? If its a straight-through design then its not going to hurt power and only help more than likely. It might burn the packing out but thats not going to hurt performance unless it blocks the airflow. As long as a muffler is "straight-through" it will only be an improvement over stock(great improvement I might add). Sound is the most difference in mufflers.

My car has glasspack mufflers. Only reason is because they are easy to get and are cheap. Being stainless steel is cool too. I also plan on adding a glasspack before the Y-pipe to replace my hollow cat. Sounds alright I guess.

One glass pack will definatly sound like a rotary. Especially after it breaks it, then it'll sound like a pissed off mesquito :-D I'm guessing the glass pack where the cats should be on my other 7 are what fixed the misquito sound (sort of like a presilencer), it sounded pretty deep but not honda style. One glasspack (just a single mounted near the end) will sound damn good at first, but after a while they start to sound like a weedwhacker on crack.

A glasspack before the Y pipe will probably die pretty quickly (depends on the quality of the muffler). Glasspacks after the Y pipe will probably be fine, especially if they are the straight through variety. I have been running a pair of glasspacked stainless mufflers for 3 years, and have been very happy with them. EVERYONE who has heard my car says it's on of the best sounding RX-7s they've heard. However, this summer I will be eliminating the mufflers altogether. Just straight 3" turbo back, splitting to a 3" Y pipe exiting directly in the stock locations. Can you spell loud?
