Cool The ethanol question....

Just curious...Has anyone tried running on the new ethanol fuel? I have an 87 Gen II n/a. It certainly is cheaper than regular gas but I am afraid I will toast my engine....cleaner burning in a super hot firing engine could be trouble...anyone tried it yet??

Meaning E85? You typically need larger injectors and probably a standalone. It's a total waste for an NA. Many on high boost/HP turbos will run E85 though.

It requires an entirely different ecu tune to run. Modern flexfuel cars can compensate for this. yours can. It won't run. Keep in mind that it may be cheaper at the pump but it is also far less efficient and even if your car could run on it, you'd get much lower gas mileage meaning any up front savings are offset or even more than offset. On an n/a you will make less power on it as well. If you want to try it then you need to get a new ecu that you can retune and then create a map specifically for E85 but even then you still aren't really gaining a benefit from it. Turbo cars can potentially see more power from it as they can run a more aggressive tune and more boost before the onset of detonation but even they will be doing it at the expense of severely less mileage per gallon.

30% more fuel needed and is only really beneficial for turbo cars.

Simple math would mean 550's would need to be 720's and 720's become 1000's.

I thought about it for a little bit but decided not to.
Run E85 with Rtek 1.7. Run 720 primaries and 1000's as secondaries.
The ecu thinks they're 550/720 so the map could possibly be on mark.

Premixing is what got me. You'd have to source castor oil as premix.
