Are you getting spark? Get a spark plug tester, crank it, and see if it lights up.

these things can be simple. check spark. check fuel. It also might be flooded. If you have a S5(89-91)you can put the gas to the floor and it closes off the fuel line. Helps throw the extra gas out of the dynamic chamber. If your a S4 then do a search on flooding. Good luck.

Um, that sounds like it wants to kick over.

Do you feather the gas at all or just completely leave the gas pedal alone?

I know this sounds weird, but try tapping the gas pedal rappidly while you're trying to kick it over. I used to have to do that when I had a hard starting problem.

If it starts you could have an aray of possible problems.

But what the #1 culprit is, I do not know.

I know that sound OH! too well it's flooded to hell or lack of compression (due to stuck or missing/broken apex seal) thats why it will spin so fast.

1. if you can tow the car get it up to good speed drop the clutch in second with the key in the on position this will have enough rpm, centrifugal force to get the apex seals to break loose and or will blow all of the gas/condensation out and the car will fire up.

2. If you have a very strong battery pour 1/4 to 1/2 oz. 10w/30 oil into each rotor chamber (three per rotor) on front and rear rotors. Turn the engine manually if possible to spread the oil throughout, let it sit for about 5 min. turn the fuel cut switch on, peddle to the floor crank the engine till you hear it start to catch then pump the peddle vigorously till it finally catches then stay on the gas to keep it running till it will idle on it's own (caution this will smoke like hell for about 10-20mins so make sure you have good ventilation and the fire dept. doesn't get called on you)

Well, all I can really do is stab in the dark. There's a lot of things that can cause this.

So I guess I'll start the first stab. Primary fuel injectors and their seals.

Before it totally failed....when you were able to get it started by feathering the gas pedal, once it was warmed up, did it fire up right away without quite as much trouble if say you turned it off for about 20 minutes?

put some ATF fluid in it. Really sounds like its flooded. If u have a kill switch for the fuel pump, make sure that all of the wires are connected up to the back of the switch. I had one pop off on me one time. Took me a little while to figure that one out. Good luck...

If you floor it while you crank it over there is no fuel entering the engine. It gets cut off. This has been a feature since 1989. Your fuel cutoff switch is redundant. I don't personally recommend the atf method unless the engine has been sitting unstarted for a few years. Unfortunately you have an auto and this really complicates matters as you have found out. I would remove the plugs and plug wires (you'll see) entirely and crank the engine over for a little while to help purge any remaining fuel in the engine. Don't get shocked by the open coils. You could also just unplug them if you don't like living dangerously. Then I would make sure that the plugs are clean and replace them. Plug everything back together. Hold the pedal to the floor for a while and periodically let your foot off and see if it starts. If it doesn't just keep your foot down and crank longer. You may need to do this with a battery charger hooked up. Do not do this for too long to avoid burning up your starter. Give it time. As long as you have a good spark and fuel it should come back.

took me 2 days to start when my friend tryed to start my car by flooring it for 5 min thinking it was a V8 or something.

the thing that got mine working was removing the lower spark plug, fuel pump power and then cranking untill the "air push" was "dry" then waiting some to let it dry some more .. did that like 5 times, 2 weeks later my apexes broke

no rotary novice will ever get to start my car alone again!.

The compression may be a little low, but not that bad.
I agree it does not sound flooded.

I'm thinking a little more starter RPM would do it.
A fresh charge on the battery and a jump from another car at the same time.

Compression sounds good, I hope it spins LOTS faster with a new battery. Have you cleaned the crap out of the spark plugs latley?

I'd say try the ole 1/4 cup of gas in the intake trick. That should rule out some stuff. Have you checked for sparks? Did you reverse the leading/trailing plugs/wires?
