engines out.. question about something strange
so my blown motor is out and today i took off the tranny, turbo/manifold etc. and took a peak inside through the exhaust ports with a flashlight because it was getting dark outside. i turned the motor and it looked as if the rear rotor was completly missing an apex seal and the other 2 were intact with no damage. i tried to look for damage on the rotor and i saw some scratches that were not very deep or big..but there none the less. the turbo is in amazing shape and has no damage. im gonna hopefuly get the motor apart tomorrow but what do you think happened? i cant stop wondering
You lost an apex seal and were lucky that it got kicked out the exhaust port rapidly before tearing the rest of the seals apart. How many miles were on the engine?
Also, unless you find apex seal bits in the engine somewhere, it did exit through your turbo. Depending on how many pieces it left in, it may have been able to go through without doing damage, but... you'll want to inspect the turbo quite closely before reusing it.

I'm just a NA guy, but you'll be inspecting the hot side vanes for indications of bits chipped off, shiny parts, or other evidence that metal contacted the turbo, hard.
It also depends partly on the conditions you were running when the engine blew. If an apex seal rolled out at low RPM while the turbo wasn't spinning that fast, the chances of turbo damage are significantly less than if it exited into a blazing hot, fully spooled turbo at 7k RPM WOT on the back straight of a track.
