Sounds like you have a bad starter with stripped gears, or a stripped spot on the flywheel.

Can you turn the engine by hand?

If you can't turn the engine by hand then there is a serious problem. It may be jammed due a broken apex seal.

the car was a daily driver until two weeks ago, i lent it to a friend for a couple weeks because his car was down, he parked it in the garage after fixing his car and it wasn't started for two weeks. when he tried it wouldn't turn over. i will call him back and ask him again if he can turn over the engine by hand again. should it turn quite easily?

try the atf trick. it will get it running enough to get you home, but its suggested to rebuild that engine at this point. the Atf will destroy the carbon, and the seals and what not. it might be able to get home. either way, an immediate rebuild is in your future.
