Engine wont start wired noise, might be starter?

Hello.. I have a 1988 RX-7 GTU. I resently put a new moded TB in. Although i dont belive it has anything to do with this problem. Here it is...

I drove my car to my school drove fine. I parked came back. And when i tried to start it. It wouldnt go. It didn't make the normail noise. I make kinda noise like the starter not in gaging. It sonds like something is spinning, metal spinning to be exact while lightly rubbing agenst something, I think it might be the flywheel. Its noting like the normal whine when it doesnt start. I think it might be a sign of the starter going bad? Also the second time after push starting it. When i blipted the throttle real fast it makes that same noise. Not on deceleration or smooth acceleration.

If anyone had this problem before or knows how to fix it plz let me in on it. Although i am getting use to people coming up saying why are you pushing your. I dont nessisarily like it.

Thank you,
Zach

Haha. Word

I would say you are correct in assuming it is your starter not engaging the flywheel. Next time carry a hammer and tap on the starter if it does that. You can try having it fixed, by getting a new solenoid, but sometimes that does not work. You might just need a new one.

As for the revving noise, get the starter fixed and then see if it is still happening.

yeah, tap it with a hammer. The drive gear is supposed to be pushed out when the starter is energized. Some times it gets stuck and spins inside the body of the start; not engaged to the flywheel. If you are handy, you can take it apart and clean it and see if all the parts are within specs. Or do like most of us and use it as a core deposit on a new starter.

OK.. thanks everyone. I shall try to tap that ****. But the noise while reving seems to get worse. It rained to day for the first time since i had to car and i couldnt want to just get the tail out if it was even just once.... Geting to the point i dont think its engaging right? is that possible? what could be the cause of that. Again i haven't fixed the starter maybe i should do that first and work from there.

Thank you,
Zach

yeah, i have the same problem...sounds like his. There is a noise like a scraping noise from the flywheel area when the engine is revved.

It rained in my area and I did manage to get the tail out. Didn't fix my problem though.

And son, re-read your post b4 u send it, it's hard to tell what the @#$! your saying.

Not that this *is* your problem, but a heavily flooded rotary sounds just like a starter that is not engaging the flywheel during cranking..."whiiiiirrrrr"...

Have someone watch the engine to see if it turns when you try to start it. IF it does, the engine is probably flooded. IF it does not, the starter is probably bad.

Well, in that case, just get a starter, bolt it on, and go on with life. Note that tapping/hitting on a starter motor can break the magnets inside, causing permanent damage and extra cost if you get it rebuilt locally.

This is not a 78 chevy pickup, please don't have a car that requires you to climb underneath and hammer on the starter to get it cranked up.

Hey, the problem was the flywheel toothed ring seperated from the flywheel. Useful info if this ever happens to any forum members.

My first impression from the description was a flooded engine as well. It really REALLY doesnt sound like it normally does when building compression. I'd check to see if the engine is flooded first before you go out and get a new starter.

It sounds to me like the gear is stuck in one place, because he gets the same sound weather the starter is spinning, or the flywheel is spinning. Pull your starter, and clean all the crud outta there, then put it back on and see if it works.

No, the problem really was the flywheel starting ring seperated from the flywheel. The buy that put in the clutch for my friend DJGeQue managed to screw it up somehow.
