Engine Weight??

I was wondering how much the wiehgt of a 13B stripped down to bare motor was. I am trying to calculate rough shipping costs and could really use the help. Im talking about the motor only. No trans, no intake or anything, just the rotor housings, irons, and oil pan.

Usually a bit over 200. I have claimed 225 with the frieght company both times i have shipped short blocks. They never bawked at it.

Damn, thanks. I was way off guesstimating close to 400lbs. So thanks for clearing that up for me.

Yeah, the bare block is in the neighborhood of 200. I picked mine up by myself when I was moving it.

Sweet. I was planning on shipping it to a place in Houston to be cleaned, but I have found some stuff thats supposed to work really well for cleaning the outside. But I am going to have to pull the motor by had also since I dont have a cherry picker or anything.

I would get a friend to help, its too heavy to pull out of the engine bay yourself without damaging either the car, you, or both.
So, where in Texas do you live? If you're close you might could borrow my engine hoist.

I live in Ft. Worth.

Me and my brother will probably end up being the ones taking it out. I have a come-along but without a place to secure it to overhead I really have no way to pull it other then by hand. But since I am like 2 1/2 hours from Killeen, I would hate to borrow your hoist, but I do appreciate your offer.

borrow an engine hoist. don't pull the engine by hand. you could really end up hurting yourself and damaging the car.

But I dont know anyone in this area who has an engine hoist. If the motor is only around 200lbs then it shouldnt be much of a problem to pull by hand with someone else. I am worried about possible injury but it seems like mostly asymetrics instead of strength. But I am a firefighter, so I know I shouldnt have much of a problem lifting and moving 200 lbs.... I hope. lol

You can rent a hoist from most equipment rental yards.

If you have some friends, it's easy without a hoist. Secure a chain to the engine and use a beefy piece of metal or 2x4's and just slide it through the chain. 2 Friends lift, the other just holds it in place so it doesn't go flying forward and bash your radiator or something. We've pulled 2 motors like this and installed one. Nothing went wrong!

You should definitely take out the rad before you attempt any engine removal, even with a hoist. It is very easy to damage.

Well the thing is I have a come-along big enough to pull the motor, but I have nothing overhead to attach it to. Thats why I am pulling it by hand. I wish I had an overhoead I-beam or something to attach a hoist to, but I just dont.

What I meant by hoist is a cherry picker (engine puller) you dony need any beem to strap it to, it stands all by itsself

I saw some movie where it said shadetree mechanics got that name not from the shade they worked in but from the need for a large branch to lift from.

i wouldnt attempt to pull the engine out of the bottom of the car. i always pull without the trans from the top. i've done three this year alone, all with excellent success. both were done with an engine hoist. if you think you can manage doing it by hand then by all means. i know that i personally wouldnt attempt it. if you were in ohio i'd let you borrow my hoist......
