Engine under cover splash shields - Interest?
Engine under cover splash shields - Interest?
Looking at the parts diagrams, it shows a rear engine under cover splash shield. I've never seen any RX-7's with these (I've had access to about a dozen including mine). Did all second gens. come with this cover. Why are these being removed (I've been looking for one from a scrapyard)?
Also, my plastic (front) engine under cover is broken near the front. I will convince my buddy to make one out of fiberglass this spring/summer (and maybe make a mold of it) yet fairly flexible. Would anyone else be interested in this?
What a bout the rear one out of fiberglass (he doesn't have the steel one so that would be a bit trickier)?

Are you talking about the black plastic thing kinda like the lower rad cover but farther back? If so I think this was part of the sport aerodynamic package and thus an option.

The panel he's talking about was aluminum and bolted underneath the oil pan. It only came on a very few models with the aero package (86-88) to my knowledge. I'd imagine people removed it because it serves no real purpose and obstructs your path to the oilpan drain plug just a little bit.
That, and I have heard that some people change sparkplugs from underneath, and this would prevent that too.

I bought one from someone for $20 a long while back. The scans of the original brochures state that it contributes to the reduction of the CD from the standard to the sport/aero package models. It doesn't weigh much, can't tell any real difference with it on, but I do like how it looks and the idea of it

Yes it was part of the Sport aero package. It was available on the 86-87 Sport, and the '88 TII/GTU. It's made of aluminum and is vented. It's designed to reduce drag, and supposedly has an effect on oil cooler performance.

I like the fact that it may help keep the engine bay a little cleaner, the underside a little smoother, and prevent stuff flying around underneath. The aerodynamic effects would be minor.
If it may help enlarge the *****, then maybe it's worth it too. You can never be too big, even if the girl has to get up on a ladder.
