Unhappy engine shakling violently

hey guys i got a problem. maybe some of you can help me out.... yesterday my 86gxl, all of a sudden started to shake violently. my thermal oil pellet came loose and was leaking oil everywhere. anyway my engine shake really bad when the throttle is applied. i can coast down a hill with no problems, but i can still feel the engine shakng. this problem is rpm sensitive and i dont have a clue to what the problem could be. its an 86gxl w 89"mild port motor", e-fan, msd, cone filter. has anyone had similar problems like this? could my motor mounts be busted? how do i tell if my motor mounts are busted if they are still on the car? please help guys my car is stuck in santa cruz and i cant drive it over hwy 17 in this condition. thanks guys

Check compression, and your motor mounts.

Also, does it have any power? If it is a blown apex seal it will have NO power and it will shake like a paint mixer at idle.

Your oil thermo pellet came loose? If this happened, you have some SERIOUS problems. The bolt at the front of the eccentric that holds the thermo pellet also serves to keep the eccentric in place (via the front hub). If the eccentric shifted, the torrington bearings have probably fallen. Replacement requires pulling the front cover, taking off the bearing plate and replacing the bearings. This MUST be inspected if the engine was run without the eccentric bolt.

DO NOT TURN OVER the engine in this condition.

yes i have power...i think. im not driving the car around but when i give it gas it revs great. exhaust is shaking too but it sounds good too. compression is good have 85 in both front and rear cold. timng is still good. i reved the motor up and my p/s bracket snapped in half!!! so i thought the p/s was flexing making it wobble. i held the p/s up and still i get tons of shaking. any thing else i should check? im getting oil seeping out of the thermal oil pellet even though i tightened it pretty good ( hammer and socket w/help from a buddy) anything else i should check?

Let's clear something up... What are you referring to when you say "thermo pellet"?

That's what I had feared. Please read my post, then read http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm

You NEED to fix this problem. Don't run the engine until you have corrected the situation.

He beat me to it. But he is 110% right, if that bolt came loose, then those bearing could move out of position causing the engine to run like a bag of hammers.

yup, that is exactly what your problem is. I know from experience.... Remember to hold the clutch in the enitre time you have the bolt loose next time.

You won't get into heaven when you die...

If you read the links that Aaron Cake gave you, you would understand the consequences completely.

I had a similar problem... turns out when that center bolt was removed (to replace the front cover gasket), it took the key that holds the counterbalances with it... leaving me with one functional counterbalance and an engine that liked to bounce. My torrington bearings were fine, didn't fall out of place as was suspected by everyone. I hope it's not the torringtons, becuase if they fall in they can damage other (expensive) things like the front stationary gear.

So, just a heads-up, the problem might be as simple as the counterweight not being keyed (however, the repair for this most likely will require you to remove the front cover, which was pretty simple for me, but rather time-consuming). Good luck.

Eric
