Engine Rebuild. Porting Tips?

Hey guys,
I just started my rebuild for some time now and I've started to port the secondary. I didn't have a tempalate to go by. I basicly went more up and down just a tad. I didn't go side to side. I did not want to mess with the oil seal and side seal support. I went out and bought carbide bits and it seem liked to skip a lot so I used sanding bits and it worked pretty well. It takes a while to take some metal off but it gets there. Let me know what you guys think. This is my first time porting and I consider this a mild street port. I would go up more but I think I'm just pushing my luck.

I was debating if I should send the irons/housings out to get ported. I didn't want to be rebuilding the engine but send my irons/housing to get ported. I rather port it myself even though it might not be as good as others but I feel more acommplashed.

Thanks guys. Any suggestions?

Hey, I like the garage set up with the lights and lots of counter space. Good luck!

Thanks. I went out a bought a bench just for the engine build. Theres nothing better than having plenty of work space.

Anyway, I just got done with one of the exhaust ports. Still no template. I went down more. And side to side. I didn't even bother touching the top. I beveled the edges of the port to protect the apex seals.

Well, heres the pics. Like always. Suggestions and Tips are highly WELCOME

Tips:
Make a clear plastic template of your rotor, including the position of the corner & side seals.
Do you layout so that the corner seals & side seal ends don't fall into the port.
Use your finger to feel the inside water jacket wall, so you don't make it too thin.
Angle the closing wall of the port to the side seal, so the seal dosen't bang straight parallel into the port closing wall.

Great Idea. I would have never thought about a clear plasticrotor. I'll bevel the upper tip of the secondary tonight or tomorrow. It's really late and my compressor is too loud. Thanks for the tips!

You can get templaces from Racing Beat.. But I'm with you. I've never used the templates..
And yet again.. kudos on a pimptastic garage.

i only use templates for a base line depending on the needs of the customer.

if you have never ported before you could have fooled me, great job so far.

Yea I know I can get them from Racing Beat. People say there are more on the consertative side. Being that, I might as well port it myself and do it mild. Save myself money on templates that most people consider small anyways. I'm not saying mine is big but good enough for me. I'm not planning to make crazy power. abywhere at 350hp is good enough for me. I don't have the fuel mods to support it right now. I'll just wait til I break in the engine first.

That is what I consider a template is. Just a base line. I figure if you know where the oil seal, side seals, and corner seals are, you should be pretty safe. Unless you get port happy. I've read around for weeks and reviewed a lot of peoples ports online. All I have to do is wait for racing beat to send back my side housings. Thanks for the compliments! I'll update tomorrow when I get the side housing beveled and the other rotor housing done.

Just assembled the engine together. A lot of delays. Anyways, turns out I need a new spacer. Which I expected. Just waiting for the spacer and things should be rolling ..

More pics tomorrow!!!! Hopefully

Good work man. Not necessarily on the ports, but on everything. I respect a man who works on a rotary.

Anyways, the shape of your ports are a little conservative, but that's better than going too far... I've gone too far, too many times.

can you leave the tape on the rotors to hold the seals togather when you drop it in? it seems like this would make it easyer, or would this cause other problems?
