Engine reassembly question: How much gap between the rotor and side housing?

How much gap can you have between the rotor housing and the side housing when you're reassembling the engine, but before you torque the engine bolts?

I'm pretty sure all my coolant seals are in their groves, but I don't know how big of a gap can be taken up by the bolts... without the coolant seals, there's no gap at all.

I believe the coolant seals shouldn't take any space at all and will be compressed completely when you bolt it together.

My side housings have been lapped, so I think that might be the reason. If the coolant seals didn't come out *at all* they they wouldn't be doing their job!

The last time I looked, the FSM has you measure the width of the rotor and write that down. Then measure the width of the rotor housing and measure that.

I'm fairly sure the width of the rotor is supposed to be smaller of the two figures. The diff is more or less the slop b/t the rotor and the side housings/ intermediate housing.

I'm not talking about the rotor to side housing clearance, I'm talking about the gap between the rotor housing and the side housing when you're stacking the engine back together...

Seems like I need some new corner seal springs...

but if there were a gap there the rubber seals could not even come close to holding compression. I believe the housings and irons are supposed to pull together.

Yeah, and I don't even have my intermediate housing yet, so this is only the front housings.

I broke *another* side seal (ironically the new one I got to replace the last one)... be careful when you pull them out of the groove. Damn things are a pain to get to fit since they're too long and you have to grind them by hand.

For the record, once you properly torque the tension bolts, the gaps go away.
