is engine really blown

Ok i bought an 87 t2 with a blown motor. 80 psi on the front rotor 60 on the back. an im wondering what i can do to find out if its blown for sure or its just carbon buildup ( i wish) i wanna try the atf trick but im worried ill just be wastind my time. the guy i bought it from was driving and the motor just cut out he said. he thinks it was running lean. safc2 is installed but not tuned correctly. it cranks fine like it should and occasionally starts but runs rough and then dies. sound like a blown apex seal? thats the conclusion i have come to but was hoping you guys might have some good input? if the apex seal is blown i guess im gonna have to buy a jspec. id like to rebuild it myself but i dont feel confident enough to do it on my own. i dont suppose there any rotorheads in the md area who would like to help me? or any good rotary shops in the area with decent prices? around the price of a jspec? thanks for the help.

How many miles on the motor? On the rear rotor does it have three even 60PSI readings or just one?

sounds like it could be an apex seal stuck in it's groove from carbon, or more likely a collapsed apex seal spring. well atleast its on the rear rotor so the front won't even have to come out unless you just feel like you want to rebuild the whole thing. Im not sure. gl

Waste a set of sparklpugs? You're not talking about a $250 investment, it's only a little more then $20.

A 20psi different is quite a lot. While it could be carbon buildup on an apex seal, it kind of doubt it. You can use the water treatment to attept to loosen the carbon. There is a right up over at www.rotaryresurrection.com .

If you're feeling up to it, you can pull the exhaust off, rotate the engine by hand and examine the apex seals.

While you're at it, you can also use a small thin screw driver to push on the apex seals to make sure they're moving and not stuck.

you cant see crap through the spark plug hole. mines got 2 broken apex seals and it still started. Id get it rebuild anyways.

if you don't want to risk a set of spark plugs then i don't think a rotary is the car for you.

^WORD. Just do the freaking water trick off rotary resurrection's website it will take off most of the carbon and possibly fix it.

you guys take **** to literally its not like this is my first seven its actually my third. ive already done a t2 conversion so get off my back. i was just saying i didnt want to waste a set of plugs for somethin i dont think will do much good. just by the description the previous owner gave me i think an apex seal went bye bye. so i guess the motor is coming out in a week or two when i get a chance. so ill let you guys know whats up when i pull it apart.

If it were me doing a rebuild, I would throw the haynes in the trash, get an FSM and the atkins rebuild video. The haynes is ok for general reference, but get the rebuild video it really covers all your bases.

You can do this, but it's be much harder. You need to get to the lower spark plug hole, as the top one is too small. Also, you will need a small mirror so you can look into the hole, and you'd still only see a small fraction of the apex seal.

The exhaust port is the best way to see.
