engine questions

Well i now have a new 87 rx7 n/a. i sold the 1 gen protege then got this beast. ( i am not a newbie at forums (protegeclub.com) so do not say do a SEARCH i really don't like that ) the 7 has 168000 miles on it and i think that engine is dieing. it has a problem with idleing really cant find that problem but i think that it is the sensor something like that, because after the cold start thing turns off you have to hold the gas so it will not die. CAN ANY ONE HELP WITH THAT.
well the other day i was searching this forum and i found the ATF trick. did it helped a little maybe i really don't know if it did. i am going to do a compression check on it today ( hopefully ) to tell me what is going on in side. so if the engine is gone what could i do engine rebuild ( myself why not i can learn ) or a shop or buy a turbo engine and do the swap ( myself i can learn these engines ) ? but if there are any little tricks like the ATF that i have not found please tell me so that i can learn about them and then do them. One more thing are there anything that i should replace like maintance wise. i checked into plugs and wires thinking that they would be cheap, hell no they are not cheap like $500 for all the things that i wanted . this is it for the first post here get back to me i have a thousand questions.

Check the FSM at www.fc3s.org. It sounds like your idle might be off a bit. It will show you how to fix it. As for the backfiring, that's normal

Well 500$ for plugs and wires is a little expensive. Owning a 7 is going to be more expensive than owning something like a Honda. Doing a compession test is a very good idea, it will tell you if whether spending all the mantinence items are worth it or should you just save for a new motor. Overall though you should change all fluids, plugs, belts, and thermostat.
As for swapping the engine youself, that depends on your mechanical ability, resources, and tools you have. I have swapped a couple of motors into my cars so that wasnt a big deal. And I am starting taking apart and rebuilding one of my old engines. I wouldnt recommend trying to rebuild your own engine unless you have some experience, but even more important, you have time to do it right. I was going to rebuild my own engine that died about 4 months ago, but I need my car up and running soon, and I didnt want to be rushed rebuilding my motor, so I just bought a rebuild and tossed it in my car.
