engine question

my friend just bought an 87 TII,the old owner said
the car is running with a 89 tII engine,my question is how can I know that is an 89 engine and how to check that is a 89 turbocharger,
because i found out that the car is using a series 4 's intercooler.thanks

Check to see if it has an electronic oil metering pump. There will be 2 sets of wires running to the OMP. That will tell you that it is a series 5(89+) If you look at the turbo compressor side, there is a line that goes from a nipple on the outlet neck, connects to a metal tube, then runs down to the wastegate. It also bracnhes off and goes to the boost controller. If that tube is metal, then it is a series 5 turbo. If not, then it is a series 4.
