Engine paint? How hot does the outside of a N/A and Turbo get to?

Getting ready to paint the irons on my engine before the rebuild, question is how hot do they get? And what about the aluminum housings?

I have found Duplicolor engine paint, a few colors rated to 1200F (ceramic) and a bunch more to choose from but they are only rated to 500F.

The clear that is rated to 500F, would this be durable enough for the rotor housings? How about the P/S bracket and dynamic chamber? It would be nice to bead blast the aluminum and coat it so it stays clean

I painted my whole engine with 500 degree paint and not a singe of it has burned off. But I painted the exhaust manifild with 1,500 degree paint, and it burned off with in the first 2 minutes of the car running.

yeah lots of people have, but it cost more and is kind of inconveniant if you don't have a powder coating gun, and oven.

Not to question ted, but...

I doubt the exterior of the engine gets much hotter than 500º. Sure, other parts of the engine might, but the water and oil jackets are between them, and where the paint would be.

never burnt yourself removeing spark plugs after a test run or anything?

i dont have any actual numbers..

but i have a rotor housing in front of me.

there is about 1/2 inch of material between the coolant jackets and the outside of the housing..

and the obvious that housing material sucks up alot of the heat on its own..

i have no evidence of numbers, but ive burnt myself
before on a housing (not manifold. and not a big burn or anything, but enough to be annoying for a day).. combined with the fact RETed has probably the most experience around here..

No, you're correct.&nbsp You could probably get away with regular paint, as it should've get over 300F on the engine (away from the exhaust).&nbsp I was referring to just the exhaust section...

the cooling system keeps the engine temp fairly low.
I don't think they make paint that can stand up to a rotary exhaust though.

so let's see....

I knew that the exhaust cooks (literally), I've seen tube steel headers glow cherry red on piston engines and even though our 13B's have small displacements in comparison they have heart!

My question had to do with the engine and attached accesories.

If you guys remember mine is the engine that met the unfortunate happy foot at the body shop whose brain(less) was told 'those rotary engines will rev for ever!' Someone forgot to mention red line and warm up to the dude! So it's all apart for a rebuild.

Anyway, I digress. I was thinking of clear coat rated to 500F for the aluminum rotor housings and the intake and other aluminum accesories, so this will work?

Yes, I pianted the housings with 500 degree clear coat, and the iron's with 500 degree gloss black. And it hasn't gottan disscollored or burned at all.
