Engine Mount Removal Question

Im trying to replace my engine mounts but the problem Im running into is the engine not lifting up. I unbolted the top nuts on the mounts and tried to lift the engine a bit but the whole car lifts up. Then i removed the bottom nuts on both mounts and tried; same thing.

Are there other bolts i need to remove than the 2 top and 2 bottom engine mount bolts?

I just did this and only the bottom nuts needed to be removed in order to lift the engine. I used a block of wood under the tranny bell housing as my lift point. Only lifts 3 or 4 inches this way

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but don't the bolts that connect the transmission have to be off for this? I copied and pasted this from a search as well take a look.


Instructions for Installing Banzai Racing FC Polyurethane Motor Mounts

1. First, disconnect the negative battery cable from the car battery.
2. Unbolt 14mm nut connecting engine bracket to existing motor mount (mount-to-engine) identified below on both left and right sides. Haynes Manual picture (11.7) on page 71
3. Then, raise car and support securely on jack stands. DO NOT place any part of your body under the car when only supported by a jack. Failure to do so can result in injury or death.
4. Unbolt 14mm nuts on bottom portion of existing motor mounts that protrude through the frame (mount-to-frame).
5. Raise the engine slowly, ensuring that you lift from the transmission, until the engine separates from the mounts and you are able to remove existing mounts and base cups.
6. Remove hardware from Banzai Racing motor mount. Note that bolt is threaded through the top cup.
7. Place new motor mount on top of sub-frame in location of old mount, as shown in illustration below.
8. Insert bolt through sub-frame and thread into motor mount, ensuring that a lock washer and a flat washer are between bolthead and sub-frame.
9. Lower engine slowly until engine bracket rests on new motor mounts.
10. Place flat washer, lock washer and thread nut onto end of bolt and tighten with wrench.
11. These mounts cause slightly more vibration than stock mounts but consideralble less than solid ones. Stiffness can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the amount of compression on the polyurethane. This is achieved by loosening the top nut and tightening the bolt to increase stiffness (or loosening to reduce stiffness). Then re-tighten the nut. Recommended setting for initial installation is to ensure that polyurethane is fully compressed, as the polyurethane will 'loosen up' during break-in period. Then adjust if needed.

I didnt unbolt any transmission bolts those instructions dont say to either. I did it on a manual transmission car also

Sorry it wouldnt let me post from my phone yesterday. But nevermind I just wasnt lifting high enough. Eventually I saw the engine move up and replaced the mounts and everything is good. Thanks though guys.

Any noticeable improvement? Did you use the Banzai polyurethane?

Yes the street poly mounts from Banzai. Theres a noticeable difference and improvement over the OEM ones which crumbled apart in my hands as I gripped them. Theres quite a bit more vibration (a good steady vibration) but it made shifting feel more precise as the engine isnt moving around so much. I tightened the mounts all the way as instructed from Banzai for the initial installation so its going to be stiffer until I adjust it later on.

The Street Version mounts can not be compressed. If you are experiencing vibration, it sounds like you need to loosen the hardware. The small bushing should be mounted under the subframe (beneath the car), there should be about a 3/8" of bolt sticking out of the drivers side, if you installed the bolts from the top. The passenger side should be around 1/8" protrusion due to the aluminum bracket thickness. The small bushing should be slightly compressed but not crushed flat.

The race version have an internal nut that allow the mount to be compressed and do not come with the lower bushing.
