Angry Engine hits 1500rpm, dies and hits idle...

Ok, this really weird thing is happening to my 86 Rx-7. Once, about 6 months ago, I got out of my car and about 20 minutes later got back into it. Started it up and everything seemed fine...little did I know. I put my car into gear, start goin and i notice my car is bairly moving and jerking. I watched the rpms hit about 1500 then the engine would cut out, hit idle and jump back up again (with the gas peddle down). So, I let off the gas and turned it off. Turned it back on, same thing. Turned it off and let it sit for five minutes...Whadya know, it ran. It ran fine. As a matter of fact, it never happened again until now. By the way, the temp gage was normal and it wasnt too hot out.

2 days ago, I was on my lunch break and it was about 50 degrees out and I was sitting in my car eating and I left it running to keep me warm. About 30 minutes later I noticed the temp was climbing well over 1/2 and usually the temp is a little above cold, maybe a cm. Then I put it in reverse, and bamb! it start doin the whole half dying thing. So I pull it forward (pretty tough, it would barley go) and turned it off, let it sit and 5 minutes later I'm up and running.

My questions is, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY CAR!?? I would greatly appreciate if anyone knows. Thanks.

Sounds like two different problems: a TPS that is bad or out of adjustment, and a cooling system issue.

For the TPS, search the forum for "TPS" to get instructions on adjusting and replacing.

For the cooling system, sounds like a bad fan clutch.

Thanks for the tip. Does anyone else have an opinion though? I've talked to my mechanic and he's a merc/bmw guy but he works on my stuff because he is a family friend etc. Anyway, I asked him if TPS sounds resonable and he isnt 100%. So, if anyone has any ideas, feel free.
