WV Engine goes clunk-a-clunk-a-clunk

We had a very hard time putting the engine back in my 7. Now it has a vibration and makes a clunking noise that matches engine rpm. We thought it was coming from the turbo but my Dad sent it to GPop and had it checked and rebalanced. The noise still persists. Now it sounds like it might be coming from the bell housing area. We don't think it is coming from the engine because as much noise as it is making, the engine would have already self destructed. It is really hard to pin down where the sound originates.
Any ideas?
thanks

I know for sure that the flywheel was torqued down correctly and I'm pretty sure I remember torquing the clutch but .........
I guess I should pull the transmission. Probably the next logical step.

thanks guys......ash

a stethescope works a little better but if it is deep inside it will be difficult to pinpoint.

one thing you could consider is fishing inside the bellhousing with a borescope, harbor freight sells a digital cheap version which will be on sale for $59 this weekend.

could be a bolt dropped down into the bellhousing and the flywheel/pressure plate is hammering on it.

Search results for: 'digital inspection'

use this coupon for another 20% off after thanksgiving.

no it won't fit through spark plug holes but you can get it in exhaust and intake ports as well as through bellhousing inspection covers. the $180 version will fit through spark plug holes and has better resolution than the cheaper version, more a true borescope. the cheaper version also does not take still pictures like the description claims. if you come across the discontinued 66550 early version do not waste your time, the resolution is horrible due to it being wireless. the picture is too grainy to do anything with it. i find them quite useful in diagnosing engines without tearing them apart.

and get the insurance, some things are worth spending the extra few bucks on.

Thanks Ben. I didn't know know they were that cheap. Might come in handy.

The noise almost entirely goes away when the clutch is depressed.

then almost definitely it is a clutch issue or the PP is hitting something in the bellhousing. try popping the bottom inspection cover off the tranny and see if you can see anything out of place with a flashlight first.
