Engine in FLAMES!!!!!!!!!

Hello, this morning, about an hour ago, I went and started my 88gxl like normal and began to let it warm up. Usually i let it warm up for like 10 minutes but today I let idle for about 15 because I was messing with a tach that someone got me for christmas. anyway, I pulled off to go to my first class and I glanced back to where the car was parked to check for leaks, a habit of mines, and saw flames on the ground. So I whipped the car around and turned it off, grabbed a trash can and filled it up with water. When I raised the hood flames came pouring out, so I put them out. The aftermath= i assume that one of the injectors were leaking. Luckily, it doesnt seem like any of the wires were burnt up. From looking above it seems like the fire only affected my intake manifold. not sure though...

check the pulsation dampener. that might have went on you. replace it with a banjo bolt. you can get it from summit for like 8 bucks. not sure what size. i am going TM to get one though. i am bringing my pulsation dampener with me.

Don't you hate it when that happens.
Usually you can smell a fuel leak & get it fixed before it catches fire.
Injectors rarely leak unless you mess with them.
Usually it's the pulse damper.

yeah if it was bad enough you could have messed up your wireing harness and any rubber house/coupler etc... that may be in that area.

Refresh my memory again, what size and dimensions does the bolt need to be.

Fire threads always get me motivated to replace my PD.

Why not just replace the damper with a new one? That way, you maintain the original function, and it will last for another 18+ years.

Some have had negative experience with the banjo bolt "fix".

What sort of 'negative experience' aaron? And what's to say that a new PD will last 18 years? Sure, his did, but the screw has been out for the last 5 years or more, in probability. I see the gray PD's (replaced units) with screws out of them all the time. I'd give the life of a PD about 5 years from what I've seen. Who wants to spend $100+ and a couple hours of labor every few years to change out a part that doesnt make the car go any faster or run any better? And in the meantime you'd still have to worry about it failing. IMO, mazda should have designed the PD better...there should be a second layer of metal over the screw, brazed on (think about a dime welded on the tip of it, but with a more conical rounded shape to allow the screw to expand outward), so that even if the screw comes out and the diapragm fails, the worst thing that would happen would be that fuel would fill up the little pocket at the end of the PD...but it could never leak.

I was just looking at someones PD yesterday and telling him about the probable fire. You could also replace with the S5 fuel rail , they dont have the same fault

Uh, thats what you get for accepting a "tach" as a gift for your car. Your GXL was probably thinking to itself "**** this ****, I came with a nice tach stock what the hell is wrong with these guys?!" and decided to commit suicide to teach you a lesson.

[/joke]

Get all that stuff fixed that got melted/destroyed in the fire and grab a banjo bolt from summit racing. I had it on my car for a few years(before it was totaled) and it was fine, no ill effects.

That's what the banjo does, run the hose directly to the fuel rail.

The banjo has nothing to do with the hose connection. It just caps off the end so fuel isn't squirting all over your engine.
