Engine fire! Repeated turbo oil feed line failure...

Last night I was tuning out a 9:1 AFR rich spot that was causing a bog at 7,000rpm and I looked next to me and saw the highway on fire under my car!

I got the fire out w/ my extinguisher.

I had replaced the original stock turbo oil feed line (short one on turbo) with a brand new factory one because the old one had started to leak a bit around where the tube meets the flange and I figured a new one would be good for another 20 years or so.

The brand new ond had ruptured at the same spot sending 2 streams of oil each as thick as a Super Soaker stream onto the turbo exhaust housing.

Luckily, since that area is isolated/cleaned up for relaibility there were just 2 silicone vacuum/boost lines that caught fire with the oil and the hood liner is a bit scorched as well as the expected darkened lower intake manifold.

So why the turbo oil feed failures all of a sudden? I have been running the same 115psi race oil pressure regulator for 5 years so I don't think it is just excessive pressure on stock piece.

Anyways I will run my own SS tube to AN ss hose oil feed now on my stock hybrid.

Good news is I got the rich bog mostly worked out of there. At 10psi boost my 720 and 1600 combo is hitting 64% duty cycle at 10.8:1 AF and at 13psi it was hitting 80% there.

The Wally 255 lph HP must be dropping pressure really bad or else that is some serious power (~360RWHP @ 10pis and ~450RWHP @13psi). I got a Bosch '044 ready to go in. It does spin the warmed 245 wide RA1 a bit through 2nd at 13psi boost wheelspin through 1st at 50% throttle short shifting at 5,000rpm

Fun fun, oh nooes on fire again- lol! 7s and fire I tell ya. Well 3rd time is the charm?

So it's leaking where the line forms the "banjo" at the turbo end?....possibly excessive tightening torque? Spec is 14-19 ft. lb.

Come by and I'll give you a used oil line to see if it does the same thing again!
Your welcome to any of the used parts I have and I think I have some extra new gaskets + factory cooper washers as well.

It is the short oil feed line that is leaking at the turbo. Both the leak have been where the tube is pressed into the little 2 bolt flange that bolts to the top of the turbo.

Come by and I'll give you a used oil line to see if it does the same thing again!
Thanks! But, errr no- don't want another failure and fire.

I could braze the stock oil line where the tube goes in as it looks like stock one is just pressed in and spot welded.

I suppose you have considered using a braided ss supply line?... Flanges are available with AN fittings to adapt it to your turbo.

So brazing it would help the oil line?

Yep, I was thinking of braided SS line to SS tube when the original high mile one failed.

I was thinking it took away a bit from the stock hybrid nature, it involved a little work and a new stock one was only $20.

Live and learn or is it live and burn :P

Damn, how am I gonna get all that soot from the burning oil off my manifolds? damn soot! I wish it was a cute little Miyazaki soot...
