engine cutting out

Well, My 87 non turbo is running pretty well except for one thing. I get a slight cut out when i run it above about 4500 rpms. Its quick other than that, but it will start to have just quick little cut outs and thats when people will pull even or ahead of me. I have a k&n intake(possibly a little dirty), exhaust (no cat, but it does have the stock exhaust manifold. This problem might be related to the dual 2bbl carb setup that was put in with a turbo kit before i bought the car, but the turbo was taken out. The fuel pump ticks (less loudly with a higher rev.). I am wondering if anyone has some suggestions as to what I could do to try to solve this problem. I have heard of rotaries cutting out because of bad apex seals, but i figured that the cutouts would be more severe if that were the case. Please help.
