No you don't need the stand adapter to do that....

HOWEVER......... here is something to consider.... when you pull the front e-shaft bolt to get the pulley off to replace the front cover... the one freaking thrust bearing has a tendency to fall forward and then get crushed as you put the bolt back in..

When you do this with the motor in the car, you have to brace the flywheel forward so the bearing doesn't fall..

Its MUCH nicer if you have the engine stand adapter, cause then you can just turn the motor so that the front cover is facing up, then the bearing should stay put as you reassemble it.

I did it on the ground last time. Both oil pan and front cover were pulled and some work was done. I had the engine sitting on the pressure plate facing up, I just set it down like that with the engine hoist, and did all my work like that, didnt have any problems.

Well, the engine sits on the ground at a decent angle(front cover up) so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll just put that back in while the engine is on the ground. Mainly, Just wanted to make sure i wouldn't be putting too much stress on those moiunting ears. Thanks

Can't you do the front cover with the engine in the car? I did my oil-pan that way, and although it was a pain to get to the front bolts I got it done in ~four hours.

Or do you have the engine out already...?
