emissions help...again (Please!)

Just failed emissions for the 4th time ($100 so far in tests).

Here's what's been done:

1) new exhaust - turbo back with new cats
2) new O2 sensor - Bosch
3) new air filter
4) Adjusted lean
5) Repaired ACV - had bad relief diaphram (just as Hailers said it would)

Now, finally got HC within limits, but CO is still high. The testjerks said that it was higher than last time - 32 and should be 20

I can't stand these people.

Anyway, can somebody suggest what else might be wrong? Thanks millions to Icemark and Hailers for their input so far. Perhaps you guys have another idea?

Thanks to all.

This...doesn't make any sense.

Did you buy a new stock OEM exhaust?

Yeah. I had it installed by Rotary Specialists in Denver. The mechanic adamantly maintains that it will pass, but no joy. He thinks that the technician isn't driving it right, but Icemark says that he's out of his mind and driving style has nothing to do with it.

Since you have a new cat, then you must not getting enough oxygen to the cats to reduce the CO to CO2. You can acomplish this two ways: You can bypass the ACV (I know, you just repaired it) and hook a hose right from the airpump to the cat air tube.

You can also add more oxygen to the exhaust stream by using an oxygenated fuel i.e. the alcohol trick. Buy some denatured alcohol at Home Depot or Lowes. Buy a gallon and mix it with your last 1/8 tank of gasoline. This will usually cut HC by 1/3 and Co by 1/3 also. That would be enough.

Keep in mind that these cars have no trouble passing when everything is working right. Something is still wrong with the car.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I agree that it should pass. I've had this thing since new and it's never failed a test before. I may do the acohol trick just to get the tags renewed. It would help to have breathing room to fix the real problem.
