EMERGENCY!! charcoal canister question

Ok I have a 96 4.6 mustang v8 in my 90 fc. I had to tamper with and remove the stock rx7 charcoal can to try and fit the stock mustang charcoal can in order to get the car barred. There are other pieces I will need to make the Mustang one work, so I put the stock can back in and Ive been driving the car for the last few days and noticing gas fumes but didnt think much of it.

My windows dont roll down lol only the moonroof works so last night it was worse and I gotta headache so I headed to my friends house who is an rx7 guy, we finally tracked down the horrible smell to the charcoal can area and it was bad!!! like I havent smelled fumes like this before. So we took the can out and theres 3 ports, the bottom and the 2 on top and the bottom smelled!!! and it got me sick I had to throw up lol, im better now though thank god. But heres the question finally....

How do I prevent this smell?? has anyone ever experienced this? can a charcoal can go bad? was mine bad? was mine hooked up wrong??we took the charcoal can from his fc and it smelled fine, we put it in my car and I was feeling so crappy that he drove the car home and I went with his bro, he said on the way to my house it was ok but I dont wanna get sick again and I dont wanna risk this happening again, so until its completely fixed I dont wanna drive it. Keep in mind thats its my daily driver at the moment haha please help!!

the only thing I can think of is you hooked it up wrong? and or you have and/or have an exhuast or fuel leak?

I havnt ran a charcoal canaster in my fcs ever and havnt smelled gas fumes at all?

happens in hotter weather when the tank needs to vent, probably means your old canister is full of crap and not consuming the hydrocarbons. you can install a check valve on the line off the firewall and plumb it into your intake so the engine will eat the fumes.

Im liking the sound of this, I hate to ask but im in a bit of a hurry time wize cuz I got work, so would you have a link or pictures to a write up on how I would do this? basically keep the bottom line coming from gas tank?? under the charcoal can plugged in?? the the top 2 ports would both go into the intake piping somewhere?? or where on the intake?

Believe it or not I did do a search on here before I posted haha and I read somewhere that a guy Td off the lines to both go to the intake or on a 13b to the oil filler?? appreciate the help guys I dont need anymore carbon monoxide haha

considering yours is a swapped car you are pretty much on your own.

i would use a metal check valve like the ones found on the FD/FC turbo PCV systems so that the arrow points towards the engine, just tee the line into your hose before the throttle body. the hose you are looking for is the smaller diameter one, follow it along the firewall to the small hardline to the passenger side of the brake booster and that is your fuel tank vent line. hose off that hardline>check valve>engine pre-throttle body.

it depends on the climate, the tank will always need to vent but in some areas you likely won't ever smell it venting. on very hot days i smell fuel vapors from just about any car, not just isolated to FCs. sometimes the charcoal canister is just overworked when ambient temps rise above 100F and can't keep up. if you can smell it below that then the charcoal canister is probably just tired/had to deal with excessive crankcase blowby or dealt with a faulty PCV system in the past.

also consider the tank itself, if the exhaust is too close to the tank or the shields are missing the tank may be absorbing too much heat and vaporizing the fuel and venting the vapors more than it should.

my exhaust ends under the drivers seat so it gets nowhere near the tank

That must be loud as hell. Also, if your exhaust ends under your seat and you're smelling exhaust while the car is running, that might be the problem?

could be the combination of the 2, i also don't see how you got it REFFed since i can't envision that is enough room to also fit a cat. FCs don't have the best body sealing, almost anytime an exhaust pipe leaks or is dumped before the bumper i can smell the exhaust inside the cars.

Activated carbon is a consumable. Maybe it's just all used up? Do you have a new(er) one to try?

That is a really good idea. I was just thinking about how to get rid of the charcoal canister without having fuel dumping somewhere.
