electrical short (15A illum fuse)
hey guys my 91 GXL keeps blowing my 15amp "illum" fuse... so all my gauges, parking lights, etc go out and i cant drive at night :-(
my question is have any of you had this problem? its not the infamous "headlight switch plug" and i even resoldered the headlight switch to no avail. i am hoping that a few people have had this happen so i can know where to start looking for the short. thanks

omg i am going to punch babies if i dont find this short. i turned the e-fan off and the headlights off and the fuse still blew while driving. i dont have enough 15A fuses or enough time to unplug each light one at a time until i find the one that has the short...

I had the same problem a few months ago. turned out to be a short behind my radio. I think it had something to do with the cig lighter. Theres a few connectors under the steering column. I think one is blue and the other is green. dissconecting them will split the wiring of that circuit in half.

K im restarting this thread...having the EXACT same problem. I was driving around last year and all of a sudden my lights all went out ...idiot cluster lighting, marker lights etc. I put a fuse in and it immedietly pops...this has to be a problem with these cars if 3 of us have teh same problem. Who figured it out???

The Illunination fuse has nothing to do with headlights.
Illumination fuse blows because there is a short iin the interior or front/rear side lighting or the plug AT the headlight switch is burnt up on the power wire there....green/white power wire I think.
To finger out what is wrong on a seires four, you pull that plug off the headlight switch. Then you get a piece of wire bare at each end. Put one end into the green/white socket on the elect plug. Then, with a brand new fuse, put the other end into the R/G socket/wire.
If the fuse blows doing that, then the problem is with one of the items listed in the attached jpg.
IF the fuse does not blow, the jumper the G/W to the R/B wire/socket of the elect plug. IF the fuse blows, then the problem lies with the tail or front side lights.
If when you remove the plug from the headlight switch, and find over there in the far corner there is a burnt contact where the green/white wire attaches, take appropriate action.
There are ten billion threads on failed headlight switches/harnesses and blown Illunination fuses. Read five billion of them and you'll figure it out.
Never tie a radio or any other aftermarket junk to the CIGAR lighter/light.
