electrical question

my 89 turbo ll has no tail lites nor dash lites .....brake lites are fine ....the illum 15a fuse blows anytime inserted ...the fsm states thats the fuse for HEADLITES ???? but they are working fine ?
im going to review the FSM but if you have any advice i would appreciate it .

ive tried to isolate the short by inserting a socket with a bulb into the fuse and removing the harness fot the taillites and dash lites but nothing happens

I'd wait for Icemark who has a hammer lock on this problem.......but if I was impatient.....I'd pull the plug from the light switch,,,,,install the fuse and see what happens. If it does not blow, I'd jumper the WG wire to the RB wire and see what happens. That's if you had a 86-88 model. If the fuse did not pop, then I'd suspect the light switch, the thing you would have just bypassed.

You might do a search using Icemark, and pageing thru until you find a thread related to lights.

Realize that I'm assuming that the above jpg is approx the same for your car. I didn't take time to look for a 90 whatever schematic. Anyway, your bumped to the top now.

a friend of mine had a very similar prob on his car... the taillights not working ...fuse kept blowing....
we found it and what happen was when he got his car back from the paint shop, they smashed one the wires agaist the frame when they tightend down the taillight nuts...we undid the nut and pulled the wire out and it fixed the problem! hope this helps!

Yup. I know its the tail lights. See the jpg? To the right there is a red arrow and next to it the words *to tail lights*.

Thats why I was suggesting taking the plug off the light switch and then seeing if the fuse still blows.

Then if the fuse did not blow, I was suggesting putting a jumper wire in the light switch connector. Between the RB(red/black) and the WG(white/green) wires in the connector. That would bypass the light switch alltogether. If the fuse did not blow, then its related to the light switch, but definetly not the tail lights.

I'll go search the Haynes and see if the wires are the same color on the 89

Read this. See the reference to the WG, white/green wire? I figure the wiring is similar. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ht=tail+lights

Hailers has this right, Sorry I am out of town right now and am not on-line as much as usual.

the problem will be related to either the dash lights or parking lights.

If you unplug the switch does the fuse still blow??? if so the white/green is pinched or shorted some where.

If the fuse doesn't blow, Just like Hailers said, with the switch still unplugged; jumper the white/green to the red/green. If the fuse blows there, then you have a pinched or shorted dash lumination wire (check the red/green at the back of the radio first... its the most common problem if there is an aftermarket radio installed).

If it didn't blow on either the Red/green jumpered or the switch just unplugged; jumper the white/green to the red black and try the fuse again. If it blows you have a short at one of the exterior parking lights. Pinched wires are the most common.

If it didn't blow, on the switch unplugged or the red/grn or red/blk jumpered then the switch is bad. Replace it and the light switch and light switch harness.
