electric fan temperature question

I'm putting an electric fan in this weekend. When I was in Advance Auto I noticed they sell a kit with the thermostat and relay ready to go. The kit is pre-set to come on at 185 degrees and turn off at 165. The thermostat on this kit isn't adjustable. Is 185 too high a temp. before the fan starts blowing? Thanks.

i got mine set at 180 (thats as low as the blackmagic goes down), if you do a lot of stop and go that may be a bad thing.

185 is fine before the fan comes on.

I had a black magic adjustable stat fail & nearly cost me an engine.

I modified it to use a pre-set stat - no worries.

FC3SKID,
I bought one of those autozone efans and they will not keep you cool at a stop light trust me.
The fan does not have a shroud. Better off going to a bone yard and pulling a efan of a 90-96 ford escort.
That fan shroud fits on the stock rad like it came on it.
Also it will pull plenty of air on med speed for the stock setup. 30 bucks is a good price

Or just keeping the stock fan with nice big shroud that does a great job. I really don't know why the e-fan is a popular mod on this car...the gain in hp is insignificant yet the load on the FC's poor charging system IS signficant. Stock fan for me I'll be going to a Koyo rad one of these days and I'll try to keep it then as well.

I only bought the thermostat and relay kit from autozone. I'm using a fiero fan. Those things can move some air. I guess the reason I'm doing it is because I'm bored and want some more room under the hood. I don't expect any power gain. Has anyone ever had their car dynoed before and after the electric fan mod. It may free up 1hp.

If you are using a thermostat that opens at 180 then a 185 setting is correct. If your thermostat opens at 195, why would you want the fan to kick in sooner?

My e-fan was not a performance or even a look mod. I did it because i spend a lot of time replacing cheap fan belts and messing with different things on the engine and cleaning the oil off of it. It was just a lot easier to work without the stock fan and fan shroud. I'm using the ford escort fan, works wonderful and stays slightly cooler then stock on medium.

The E-fan went on my old NA because I was too cheap to buy a $190 replacement fan clutch.

Jon88- the e-fan was a popular mod for my car, because I don't use a fan for 95% of my driving, which is almost all highway. I'm sure there are many more out there like me. The stock fan was basically sucking down a little power & gas for nothing- she runs the same temp without it, believe it or not. The only time I've forgotten to turn the fan on recently was when I got pulled over by Tex DPS (no turn signal in the middle of a deserted highway- go figure). Halfway through him writing the "warning", I snapped that I had forgotten to turn it on, by the time I got back to the car, she was only at 3/4 (whew )

I'm noticing a paridigm with these Flex-A-Lite Black Magic #150 e-fans. A member was telling me that he almost lost his Engine aswell. With my history dealing with these fans - already I had to replace mine due to some kind of Internal damage so with the 2nd one I'm cautious on a potential pre-mature death.
