I am looking at 2 models. One from Perma-Cool and the other is a Black Magic by Flex-A-Lite.

I think that at $88 for the Perma-Cool, I'd be better off with that than spending up to $50 for a used one that I'm sure can't match 2950 CFM. The Black Magic is a little too $$$.

do either of those fans come with temp switches to turn them on, or do you need to buy something to do that?

after mounting the Perma-cool, can you still use the stock fan shroud to help prevent fingers from getting chopped off?

If there is nothing wrong with your stock fan, leave it alone. There are no eletrical fans that can pull as much air as the stock ones. If you are going to change fans, there should be a valid reason to do so. Almost everyone who switched have had their temp. rise a bit.
But if you must, you need to use a shroud on any fan. It won't do jack **** if it's pulling from around the radiator.

Check out:

Summit Racing has a Perma-Cool adjustable temperature switch.
If you wire it direct to the battery it will run after shutdown until things cool down. You can set how long by adjusting the location of the sensor and the set temperature.

I totally agree. Unless you're having low-speed cooling problems there's no need change the fan.

However this advice often falls on deaf ears so if you're going to go electric I'd recommend the Flex-a-lite Black Magic 150, simply because it's so easy to wire up. The adjustable thermoswitch and relay are built into it, and you simply plug in a fused battery supply, a ground wire, a switched ignition wire (unless you want it to keep runnig after shut-down), and if you want, a manual override switch and an A/C input. Too easy, and you know it's done right. I have no personal experience with how effective this fan is, but I've never heard anyone say it wasn't up to the task.
