ECU upgrade...please post opinions

Ok I am thinking about going with the E.L Prototype chip over a Super AFC.

I have around $600 to spend so I am thinking this will be the best route. I was told that they can customize it to my needs. Here are my mods.
1990 Turbo II
Street Ported Engine
Cone Filter
Custom TID
Removed Smog Pump
Fluidyne Radiator
Bonez Downpipe
TestPipe
HKS Catback Exhaust
HKS BOV
720 Secondaries
ACT street/strip Clutch

I have no FCD so I am really carefull with the car untill I either get a FCD or a chip (most of the chips will elimate Fuel Cut)

So what I am wondering is what kind of experiences have you people had with ECU upgrades? Would I be better off to go ahead and buy a FCD to hold me over and save a little more for a Haltech. Can a Haltech be installed by a novice?

Well if I had to choose between a chip and an s-afc I'll take the s-afc(thats what I've already chose myself). It gives you some adjustability. I mean, every car won't be the same so when they make the chip they will be guessing basically. For $290 you can have an s-afc and put it on a dyno and get the most power out of your car. Thats my opinion. Now if you can afford an EMS, then I say go for it, even if you have to put off the s-afc or chip for a little bit. Might want a FCD to hold you off then sell it for some money back though.

Sorry to do this, but this kind of goes along with the thread.

If you have a s-afc does it also act as a FCD, or do you need both the FCD and s-afc?

I got 2 chips programed from E.L. Prototypes one for Horsepower & one for Smog inspection on a streetported motor. And I have a S-AFC. The HP chip from EL includes a FCD. But I wish I had just gone Haltech ... $395 for both chips, $330 for S-AFC a few hundred more I could have had a haltech.. and I still will get one next year.

The thing about the S-AFC is its not going to adjust your pulsewidth or timing curve .. so if you want full potental you need a S-AFC & a reprogrammed ECU.

Save your 600 dollars, Haltech E6Ks will be popping up for cheap very soon. Not mine though.

Hrmm well I am thinking then I should just get a fcd and a boost controller to hold me over until I can save enough for a haltech. The only issue I have with the Haltech is tuning.....hopefully I can find some people to help me out with this

True, the whole Haltech idea to me sounds kind of overwhelming.

Man I just can't make my mind up. As of right now I think I am going to go with a E.L Prototypes ECU.

I have also heard that Apexi's Power FC may soon be released for a fc3s

I agree with you on that. Seems like you'd have to reply on other people too much. I could get a haltech right now, but I'm going to get a fmic and some other stuff. A PFC for the FC sounds great. They have them in Japan already. Seems much more user friendly.
