ECU question

I'm in the process of installing an AF gauge, thing is 3 of the wires tap into the ECU. I found the ECU under the passenger footrest and all, and my battery is disconnected for safety, now, would it be bad to unplug some of the components that plugs into the ECU so that I can tap some new wires in there? There are 3 big yellow sockets that plug into it, I need to unplug the center one and the left one (12v ignition, o2 sensor, and ground) so that I can tap the new wires in there, would this be bad?

Are you REPLACING the inputs at the ECU, or just "tapping in"...I doubt you're replacing, so you don't need to remove the pins at the plugs...Unwrap the harnesses a ways to get some "play room", cut the wire in question at a convenient point, and splice in your "new" wire using appropriately-sized butt splices or window splices, crimped with a good quality tool. The O2 sensor wiring shield terminates at some point near the ECU, IIRC, so don't splice that wire in too far from the ECU, or you'll have to deal with the shielding jacket also. Your ground can be attached anywhere on the metal chassis near the gauge, you don't need to use the ECU's ground wires...
