Can I pass California Smog with a Jspec S5 TII engine using the US ECU?

Can I pass California Smog with a Jspec S5 TII engine using the US ECU? I know that the Japanese ECU's for any car has different timing and emmision settings set for Japan standards. I also know that the US and JDM motors are indentical in appearance and in performance. So if I use the US ECU, it will run like a US motor rite? Please let me know if anyone has even done it before, because I plan to run this car legit and even have it registered to my car.
