ECU Advice

My friend is going to buy a 2nd gen NA and convert it to turbo. I know 3rd gens inside and out but know squat about 2nd gens. What should he do for an ECU?

Your friend should contact his local tuner to see which ECU best fits his goals. I would recommend a full standalone EMS. Brand doesn't matter much as long as the tuner can make the car perform well enough to make the owner happy.

Use a Turbo ECU of the same series as the car and use the stock n/a EM harness along with turbo afm/pressure sensor.

I'm surprised no one asked this yet......Is he swaping in a turbo engine, or is he doing a turbo on an n/a engine?

Im guessing he is doing a turbo engine in an n/a shell. So, if he plans on keeping the stock turbo on it right away, then just get the stock turbo ecu. If he is doing a mild turbo upgrade on it, then I suggest the Rtec as well. If hes is going to go nuts with a big *** turbo, then microtech or haltech, depending on his overall needs.

If he is doing the n/a engine with an add on turbo, check out aaron cakes info, he seems to know the most about that type of job.

Depends on the goal. If you are just doing the standard TII swap (check the FAQ) and plan to run the stock turbo, use the stock TII ECU.

If you plan on upgrading the car, go with a standalone.

If you are turbocharging the NA engine (check the FAQ) you can get away with the NA ECU at moderate boost levels on a small turbo. Anything else and you need to go standalone.

Wait... what? I thought I'd need at least a piggy back to correct fuel and what not. Am I wrong in that thinking?

Yes, you'll need some kind of fuel controller as you'll need to upgrade the injectors.
