upgading your ECU will not give you any more performance!! waste of money. Have you done Exaust system? intake? , the GXl models are the heavier coupe models, I had one.

Neither. Solid rotors are prefered for street use.

That's not true. The non-turbo RX-7's in my area that run a standalone EMS will beat a stock TII and still get better gas mileage than a stock RX-7. Yes, exhaust and intake mods are your best bang for the buck, but the EMS does wonders for performance.

It will only hurt if it is not tuned correctly. Going the cheap route and rigging things to work without the proper tools and knowledge is a sure way to blow up your engine. If you don't know how to tune an engine, then don't buy an EMS from some cheap internet deal thinking that you can install and tune it just from the instructions or from dubious tips from the internet forum peanut gallery. If you are willing to fork out the $1,000-3,000 for an aftermarket EMS, be sure to also set aside about $500 for professional tuning, depending on pricing in your area.

Solid (vented) are best for most situations.

Where are you in Florida, do you drag race or road race, how much do you want to spend, and how much down time can you afford on your GXL?

i live in ocala florida. between orlando and gainsville.
i just want to increase my acceleration.
i've done my intake and next i would be doing my exhaust. but i read somewhere on the net, that i can upgrade my ecu and you could tell the difference.

i really appreciate your input.

Well, it sounds like just the exhaust should do it for you. Also, you could change to a 4.30 rear end for better acceleration, but that is going to be rather pricy if you don't know how to install the gear set yourself.

You aren't all that far away from where I am right now. Send me PM if you are ever planning to visit the Tampa / St. Petersburg area, and I may be able to arrange for a demonstration of a non-turbo RX-7 with an aftermarket EMS that is supposedly slow, LOL.

OK, from what I've read the real "chip upgrades" (you send them your ECU) advance the timing 10 degrees between 1500-3500 RPMS for better torque. They also change the timing & fuel maps >3500rpms which requires running premium but does net more HP. I think they might have some adjustments for porting, full exhaust, & full intake.

Note I'd espect a hit on fuel economy though, so use at your own risk. AVOID THE EBAY ONES though.

Here's a review:

and here's the original thread where this was discussed:
