eating gas, poping flames..

latley my car has been eating ALOT of gas (roughly 10 dollars just to get back and forth to work) for the 10 minute drive each way..
also it only used to throw flames out at redline, now anytime over 4k it throws them.

I checked my TPS and it's at .8 fully closed, and 8 fully open.. I know thats a little high
and it may be damaged.. but I should check again because the prongs on the volt meter were messed up.
anyone elce know what might be wrong?

is black smoke coming out exhaust at all?

A faulty/dirty AFM can cause bad gas mileage and black smoke. But ive never heard of one causing flames.

at high RPM's, if I let off and dont shift then yes, alot of black smoke comes out after the flames come out.
but I'm sure thats just un burnt gas and oil that got past the oil seals.

8k-ohms at WOT???
Dude, throw that **** away.
You absolutely cannot have the TPS read over 6k-ohms at WOT.
In fact, anything over 5.5k-ohms is BAD.

well I'm going to be gone for the weekend so the car will be sitting untill I get back, and when I do.. I'm going to grab a better voltmeter and just make sure it was really going to 8k, if so.. then I'll put on a new one.

ok guy's..
I tested my TPS again with a new volt meter and it's actoually 100% dead on.. so dead on to spec it's actoually scary..
I replaced my plug wires today.. it's still running a bit rich. I wonder what elce would be up with this.

car mods are:
bone stock 88 N/A with 2.5" straight exhaust
Removed PS / AC / Air Pump / Cats / Rats Nest and Blocked off all other emissions stuff

thats about all.
one thing comes to mind is that when I was working on my exhaust manifold I may have damaged the wire on the O2 sensor right where it comes out of it because I set it on the ground wrong.

any way I can test that? it also *could* be dead, it looks brand new but who knows about the actouall condition.

A bad O2 signal would not have that drastic of an effect on your fuel economy... it would make it bad, but wouldnt give you all the flameage and crap.
