Easy way to get engine back into the car and aligned
I found this trick out. THIS **** SHOULD BE ARCHIVED!
haha yea right.
Anyway I used a hoist to put it in the car and got it a least somewhat on the input shaft. I then let the engine all the way down so the mounts were sitting on the crossmember.
Now here the genius part.
I put myself in the engine bay and literally grabbed the engine and lifted it into place. Went right on the shaft and dropped right into its mount holes! holy ****!
Well it worked for me anyway.

Yeah, thats the part I affectionately call "monkey *******' the engine. Kinda wiggling and rotating it till the splines line up and everything slides into place. I don't let the engine all the way down though. I get it lined up on top of the mounts so that its centered in the engine bay and then tweak it till she slides home. Lock the belhousing to the block with a couple bolts, and drop it on the mounts.
Anyone ever try using a tranny jack? hahaha we do things the hard way far too often around here. Well, not so hard way for this. Only takes about 20 mins for me from lowering the motor over the fender to getting it sitting on the mounts.

After spending over an hour jockeying engine and trannie together and getting down to the motor mounts, I'm pulling the engine and trannie as a unit from now on. Damn, what a PITA!!
I think it would be tougher to pull the tranny with the motor than trying to get them back in once out. With them separated the engine essentially balances nicely in the middle. I can only imagine the pain of having someone above the car working the tranny and below the car working the tranny and someone to make sure the engine doesn't hit anything in the process and then someone manning the hoist.
I do them with one guy on top (me) one guy underneath (tranny guy) and one person on the hoist. (saves time jumping fenders) Still only takes 20 mins to get it locked in place.

I can install an engine with tranny attatched into the car and have it and the tranny securely bolted up in roughly 10 minutes, maybe 15. IF you have a good work area with a good hoist there is NO reason not to. Damn a bunch of monkey ******* and WWE ****...
I have an old yoke that I use to stuff in the end of a trans, I can do it without losing a drop of gear oil
one for turbo and automatic, one for 5sp NA...
but do you also have the special device that you place over the hose to the power steering pump(I leave mine on the engine) that keeps the reservoir from emptying? I made mine from an old sparkplug boot and a bolt in the end pointing upwards, fits the pump perfectly
Well, I don't have good work areas and I wouldn't have had enough space to get the whole thing in the engine bay connected. If all you're doing is taking the engine out, why bother with the tranny? I dont drop my exhaust to do the motor. Simply unbolt the header from the straight pipe and pull it off the engine, leave the rest of it hanging. Messing with the drive shaft alone takes more time than leaving the tranny in the car could possibly use up. Especially since you then have to switch ends of the vehicle that are elevated to then attach the starter and such.
If I had an engine sling with angle adjuster on it, I bet I could take it down to less than 10 mins. I like how I do it and its cost effective.

Takes me and a friend about 10 minutes from over the engine bay to in and on the mounts. Takes me alone about 20. I'm just using a hoist w/ balancer. Not too hard after you've done it a few times.
I just jack the trans up in the car with a jack, and then make sure its in gear so the shaft doesnt try to spin and ****. Then put the engine in the hoist with a slight angle and drop that peice in, c a k e. Takes like less than 15 mins to have it in (and another 20 to have it running). I dont get the big problem.
