The SUB-ZERO container you are referring to, it does ABSOULETLY nothing and YES you can remove it. I guess Mazda said it is not a vital part. It is supposed to inject antifrezze into the motor on cold days or some bull ****.

if it's driven by a belt, it might be your air pump. it works your 5th & 6th ports and emissions stuff.

Yes, that it your air pump. It is used to pump clean air through the ACV and to the catalytic converter. Without it, your cat will burn up and melt. Also, if you have a N/A, it is used to open the auxillary ports.

You can substitute an electric pump:

On a stock port engine..no. The electric air pump is a good idea if you are really dead set on removing the airpump. However the amount of parasitic drap it puts on the engine is minimal at best, and your not going to get a performance gain by removing it.

youll have to excuse my ignorance(i know very little about rotaries)... how would i go about yanking my 5th and 6th ports??? and this wont be a stock ported engine. i plan on a pretty good port job.

i will be swapping this motor into my 1986 Corolla and using it strictly for drift purposes. so this engine will see high rpms most of the time, which is why ill want as little extra parasitic drag as possible.... (ie. no a/c, no powersteering etc...)

If you remove the aux port actuators, the 5th/6th ports wont work. You can either wire them open or leave them closed. When I got my, they were gone and the ports were wired open. About the only time I reccomend doing this is road racing, which is what the previous owner used my car for. I don't know much about drifting, but unless it will see constant high revs and you dont need the low down power, I wouldnt recommend doing it. It kinda felt like a car with torbo lag. It had crappy power low down, and then there was a sudden increase in power around 4k rpms.
