I dunno if this would work the same, but for the top layer of gunkish stuff, I used a steel wool pad and it made stuff come right off, then just wiped it down with a paper towel and it looked like new.

I used a round steal whool attached to a drill and it works great; only 2 dollars at home depo. The thick oil deposits come right off and makes it shinny
; compared to the degresser, spray clean, spray clean and more spray clean. Would have love to use the water pressure, but had to do a cheap man way to make budget.

I can't say enuff good things about good ol' Simple green and a scrub brush. You can let the simple green soak into your skin as you clean and it won't kill you or even burn. I love the crap. Safe around pets and everything, before you clean your parts that is. LoL
I got a ton of crap off with Gunk Engine Degreaser. Block off everything that can't get wet. Be VERY careful about this. Then just spray everything under the hood till it looks like a big white blob of foam. Let it sit an hour or two, then hose everything off. Took about 75 % of the crap off my underhood parts. The rest will require scrubbing.

Spray degreaser (I use purple power)
Don't leave it on to long - It actively etches shinny aluminum.
Hose off (pressure washer if you have it)
Repeat.
Then dry it off with a leaf blower or an air hose.
Spray it lightly with a silicone protectant like Armorall.
Blow it smooth with a leaf blower or air hose.
That will shine & refresh the plastic & rubber and displace any left over water in the electricals.
(An ounce of shine is worth a pound of performance.)

Thanks,
Some notes:
Armorall on the fan belts will spin off quickly when you start up.
Armorall also collects dust, so I give it a quick redo when I wash the car.
When I bought the black turbo, this car sold quickly. (the ounce of shine)
A black engine bay just dosen't bling a picture.

Warning
Make sure not to spray the Alt with degreaser. If it get down inside the alt, well you might be buying a new one soon.
Here is a TII clean picture. Once a week when i washed the car I would also wash the motor (Cold) and just used regular car was soap.
