early style cooling system?

normally i like to think i know everything about the fc but in this case ill admit that just isn't true. and i briefly searched the fsm for this but found nothing. my friend just got an 86. it has the small d.s. fender mounted coolant overflow bottle. on the top of the radiator there is a nipple where normally there is just the coolant level sensor. this nipple has a coolant level sensor wire soldered into it. the nipple feeds into a fitting with a radiator cap next to the p.s headlight, where the large overflow bottle is usually located. the hose then goes to the small overflow tank. anybody seen this before?

yep. the first cars had the overflow coming from the cap on the engine, and then to the small tank on the shock tower.

this didn't work so mazda had a kit to fix it. it has the weird coolant level sensor, and the pressure cap on the bracket by the bumper

it was a updated kit to keep air out of the coolant system

ok, j5sense, now you got me confused because the coolant bottle installed in my fc looks like the one in the diagrams but I don't have that "extra" radiator cap assembly. The recent "nos" "early version"coolant bottle I purchased is this http://www.ebay.com/itm/190566099078...84.m1497.l2649

just for the record the fc I'm referring to is an 86 gxl (not sure of the exact build date offhand). It does have the early version p.steering pump though so I think its relatively early.

there are 5 cooling types for the FC.

the early system has the overflow you just bought, and the cap is on the thermostat.

the next system they moved the coolant bottle to the front, this happened late in the 86 model year

then there was that overflow kit thing we're posting pics of, it retrofits everything prior

then they added a cap on the radiator for the 88 model year. i think the radiator then gets the overflow, and the cap on the engine is just a filler?

and then S5 changes again, but it seems to work so S5 are all the same.

so the coolant bottle moves to the front pretty quickly. parts fish shows after vin 129445

The DS Fender overflow tank is a great alternative for when installing an FMIC.

Great spot for a water injection tank too.

Isn't it a bit small...? I guesses it would work for a drag car.

I guess it depends on how often you're in boost. For me it would be fine.

I know Im gravedigging a little, but I'd rather bump this thread instead of starting a new one. I have the early style radiator with no pressure cap and the overflow tube by the coolant level sensor, and no overflow tube by the thermostat. Should I have a flat cap by the thermostat and a pressure cap on the small tank by the PS headlight? Is there another way to run my coolant system so I dont have to have the extra tank next to the PS headlight or am I stuck with it since I have an early radiator? Thanks guys
