Steel has to get around 500 degrees F before it will turn blue like that. If that happened while your engine was running, a slightly discolored e-shaft would be the least of your problems.
The discoloration you see is a byproduct of the hardening process the e-shaft went under as it was being manufactured by Mazda.

The E-Shaft is fine. Here is a pic of another one pulled from a engine that ran great and had about 110k on it.

Now its time to think should I re-use it.
Simply because the engine I'm building are 95% brand new parts except the rotors (so far), even the rotors I sent it off to have new bearings install.
so ... if I re-use it, hmm, I have to send the stationary gear out as well and press new bearings in ... hmm ...

new shafts have that rainbow color too. as long as its straight, it should be fine
