Dummy voltmeter gauge install Q?

I'm installing a voltmeter in my 94 PGT (thought I'd ask here because this forum is way better) and wondered about the gauge hook up. Thought I'd connect to the cigarette lighter since I don't use it. It has 2 connectors 1) single prong with 12V power all the time and 2) 3-prong with two prongs that see power when lights come on, and a ground. Questions I have are:

1) do I connect the gauge power wire to the single prong with 12V all the time? Seems like this may drain the battery?

or,

2) should I connect to the 3 prong connector where two prongs see power when lights come on??

Thanks....

Neither.
You want an ignition switched +12v and any good ground.

you should have a look in the wiring diagram and see where the stock FC voltmeter comes from. i believe it would just use the 12V switched power to the instrument cluster, but i'd have to look
