Question a dumb question

Hey guys but i'm not quite sure what the air pump is for, any info? Earlier this week i was changing out my belts and the head to the bolt that has to be loosened to take off the belt that leads to the air pump broke, so now i have a nonfunctional air pump until i get that bolt taken out. Iwould do it my self but it is pretty tough to get to and i dont have the tools for the job. So is it safe for me to drive w/o it or is there more to it.

if you still have a stuck exsut system you should find a way to fix it, the air pump sends air to your cats and if there is no air they will clog......means alot of back fireing
