Dudes - Newbie to the Rotory World

hi all,

I am a complete newbie to the rotory engine.... I really like the 2nd gen RX-7. So I have a couple 'newbie' questions.

Are the NA RX-7s models GTU & GXL, and then there is the Turbo, right? Did I missing any? What is the difference between the GTU and GXL....and if I wanted to convert a NA to Turbo, would it be easier to buy a completely new engine w/ turbo stuff or are there conversion kits?

If buying a completely new engine....then where? is the a URL you can refer?

If conversion kit......ditto.

Thanks!!!

well...first thing you have to learn in this world there newbie...is its spelled rotAry, not rotory. Now you know.

There is no turbo kit for the N/A. The N/A transmission and drivetrain is not strong enough for a TII's horsepower, so you have to convert the entire drivetrain and computer/fuel system. It's not worth it if you just want a turbo'd car. (its worth it if you're like me and want to do the conversion yourself, doing all the labor, and having something to show for it in the end.) But for the average person just buy a T2 to begin with.

BOTTOM LINE: if you want a turbo get a T2, if you get an n/a and want to make it fast start w/a GTU

Bottom line (part 2): If you want cheap, buy a canadian GX!

(mine cost $800)

Yes there is. I don't have the link right now, but if you search for my name and the keywords "turbo kit" you will find it.

Wrong.

ahh......it's RotAry.

Figures I spelled it wrong.

I will keep looking. Seems that a turbo II is hard to come by. I never seen them in the classified ads and stuff. So I figured....if there is some turbo kit for NA. Maybe that would be easier.

I will do some searches for Turbo Kits and see what comes up.

Aaron Cake - if u do remember the link, please let me know........thanks

I dont have the xtra $$$ to fork out and buy a FC yet cuz I am still working on my WRX. but I want to get an FC just for Racing. My WRX has to be a compromise between comfort(as in 'family' sedan) and performance. The FC will just be performance.

Thanks all for the feeeeedback. I will continue my search. I did see a 1990 GTU on Ebay going for under $500....but reserve not yet met. However it had no engine and no interior........but that's all good. Still would have to find an engine tho. I know I cant get this one now....but I wonder if an Turbo II engine would bolt right up to a GTU or GLX or etc....

It's funny.....I dont have an FC, but I have already been shopping around for aftermarket products for it. It is fun to look......

aaroncake....,

the n/a tranny and drivetrain are not capble of handling alot of power, the gear ratios are diff, the n/a transmission is even a diffrent size, yea yours might be holding up now but your arent pushing alot of rwhp. you will find that your tranny will die, and you will have wished you did tha swap too, also dont think of this as me slaming you i love your car im just telling you how it is.
