Dropping an S4 tranny into an S5 car...possible?

Ok guys here's the situation:

My car was about to get some new grounds and its flush mount headlights when the tranny got stuck in reverse!!!I tried rolling it back to see if it would go back to working but nothing! I'm only glad it happend in my drive way and not on the road! The shifter will go into 1st and 2nd but will just spin with no power transfer to the wheels. If I leave it in neutral and ease out the clutch while running it goes into reverse. 3rd, 4th,5th, and R are not selectable, even using a lot of force.

My only possible quick fix is to use a spare S4 tranny that I have here. What kind of wiring/fabrication will I need to do to fit it in?

Ok from looking at the S4 and S5 FSM's they look to be usable cross series. They both have the same things comming off of them like neutra switch, 5th switch, and backup lights. Right? I'm pretty sure that the engine bolt patter is the same for all 13B's right? so that shouldn't be a problem. If you all know of anything that will make it impossible for me to do this please let me know ASAP because its my DD and I need to know what has to be done to get it back on the road.

Santiago

ps- thanks for looking

i had a very similar transmission issue... got stuck betweem reverse and 5th. i didnt need to replace the tranny tho... i dropped it, looked inside and discovered that all that happend was somethign got knocked out of alignment within the shifter, the little things the shifter moves had gotten knocked. i just popped it back in....cars been fine ever since

Any elaboration would rock! i'm going to pull the shifter and spacer/bushings and see if that is part of my problem, hopefully!

Did you just pear in through the top or did you open the shifter housing up?

Yes, open hatch drop tranny in hatch, there done... lol. Seems to me that you have broken a shim in the Transmission or your clutch is entirely shot (most likely the shims), yes if it is a S4 NA to S5 NA it will work without problems, but if going from na to turbo there will be issues.

shims.

thats what theyre called,lol

87rx7guy...

i ended up taking the whole tranny down and opening it up, this allowed me to see inside and move the shim back into place very easily.

im not sure how else to elaborate, but...
basically i had the whole tranny down, opened it, moved the thing that the shifter moves back into the 'neutral' slot, reinstalled the transmission, and the car worked just fine.

Thanks to both of you guys for taking the time to post in here and help me out! It sucks my buddies are out of town, I wrench alone tonight!

Where is the shim located? I don't see any shims listed in the shifter housin. I don't think I want to tackle the rest of the disassembly for the tranny. I got less than two days to get this working again.

thats it... that pic is the area my problem was located.

maybe there not shims. i dont really kno what those are- i just thought that was the word for "thingge the shifter pushes to put the car in gear" anyway yea the stick that comes down from the shifter was out of alignment in that area in the pic in my situation

cool, i've been soaking up the gearl lube thats in there for the past 30 min with some towels to see if I could get a view of anything in there. No luck yet but I did remove a small chunk of what seemed to be a bushing. So there might be a broken bushing in there screwing with the shifting.

Ok guys I think i'm in luck! I got my true duals off and started thinking about whwat to do first before removing the damn tranny....

Well one guy on nopistons said to try and switch back the reverse detent(?) so I tried that to located and investigate this thing on my spare trannys and it seemed simple enough. Dropping the tranny low enough so that I could unscrew the sensor that goes in that spot was pretty simple, with air tools .

Well I poked an allen wrench from my roller blades in there and used it as a lever to pop the switch back to the neutral position! Instead of wasting a good hour replacing exhaust and **** I decided that I would run the engine open header to test if it had worked or not. Well From what I can tell I have forward gears again!

Here is what is screwing with my head though! If I leave it in neutral now and ease out the clutch the drive shaft still spins! So.....now what does this mean? I might just bolt up the drive shaft with open header and see what happens when the whole drive train is hooked up.

Any comments/advice?

The output shaft will definatly turn without a driveshaft connected to it in neutral.

It should be pretty easy to stop from turning though, thats just the friction from the bearings in the tranny making it turn.
