drivetrain balance

drivetrain balance

i forgot to mark my drive shaft joke with my differential, i heard they need to be set back to the way they were to preserver balance. Am i in trouble?

Actually you do! I had a clutch changed once and the guy didn't mark it and just threw it back in. He had a 50/50 chance to get it right, so guess what happens? Massive vibration! At home I jacked it up, unbolted the driveshaft from the diff, rotated it 90º, bolted it back up and went for a spin. No vibration...
Note that if you put it back on a half-turn from where it was it'll be OK. It's only a problem if it's a quarter-turn wrong.

I've heard that it is important to get it bolted back up the way it was too or it will be out of balance.

Does anybody know if they balance these things after they're mounted at the factory or something?
